Funchal Municipal Tourist Tax

From 1 October, there is a new Tourist tax. This will be collected on your behalf, on your bill and paid to the local council. Below we have answered some general questions about the tax.

How much is it ?

The most important question. It is €2 per night, up to a maximum of 7 consecutive nights, per person, per stay. The maximum amount to be paid by the guest therefore is €14.

Who has to pay this?

Everyone staying in Funchal who is over 12 and does not live in Madeira has to pay the tax.

Who is exempt from paying?

Guests with a disability of 60% or more.

Children aged 12 or under.

Residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

What is considered a stay?

A continuous stay in the same hotel. Therefore it does not matter if you have separate contracts or change rooms, or book extra nights in The Residence or Porto Mare. If you book extra nights in The Cliff Bay or Porto Santa Maria, for example, you will pay again.
